Facing onto Mombasa’s Diani Beach, on the south coast, the Kaskazi Beach Hotel is a value accommodation only a stone’s throw from the warm Indian Ocean. The resort lies within walking distance of the humble Diani’s Shopping Center, and is well-situated for catching a taxi or tuk-tuks to local shopping areas in Ukunda during your exploratory beach holiday with AfricanMecca. The hotel has not caught up with its neighborly rivals in the area offering better options at similar costs or even lower.
Service levels and standards of this simple budget resort are ever decreasing, and everything on the property is dated while refurbishment is still being waited on. The Kaskazi offers 191 rooms, all of which have been styled using indigenous Swahili craft and art. Rooms are divided between standard and superior categories, and there are also two types of suite offered – Junior and Superior. Both Standard and Superior rooms provide choices of sea or garden views. Amenities in Standard include air conditioning, en-suite bath or shower, safe (usage at a fee), mosquito nets (upon request), telephone and balcony. In addition to these amenities, superior rooms provide hairdryers, ceiling fans and TVs (with international news as well as local channels).
The numerous activities organized by this accommodation will keep you entertained during your seaside trip in Mombasa. You can play water polo, shuffleboard, volleyball, table tennis, pool and more, and there is a large pool between guests’ rooms and the beach, flanked by palm trees. A range of outdoor activities can be enjoyed during your beach vacation in Kenya, from quad bike trails, deep sea fishing, diving and snorkeling at Kisite Marine Park or safari to the nearby Shimba Hills for the day or overnights safaris to Tsavo West and East or Masai Mara. Hotel facilities include a fitness center and conferencing venues, and there is live entertainment during some evenings and voluntary karaoke. Services include free Wi-Fi in public areas, and massage treatments at extra cost.
Kaskazi has two restaurants – Karibu and Aladdin’s – and four bars. Both restaurants serve international a la carte and buffet fare, as well as standard Kenyan cuisine. Karibu is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, while Aladdin’s Grill only opens in the evening for dinner. The Lounge Bar, inside the accommodation building, provides a relaxed space to meet with other guests after a relaxing day at the beach, while the Beach Bar provides views out over the mesmerizing, turquoise Indian Ocean.
If you are not bowled over by the hotel’s cuisine, you can venture into nearby restaurants along the south coast – adventure is a vital ingredient of any coastal tour in East Africa. Although Kaskazi Beach Hotel is located on a fairly rocky stretch of Diani Beach, you do not have to walk far to get to areas where the soft white sand spreads out in all directions. It is well worth venturing out from your resort during your seashore travel to the Indian Ocean.
A ferry ride will take you to Mombasa Island, where the city’s old town is rich with cultural history. Nearby South Coast regions such as deep sea fishing at Shimoni also provide reasons to use your hotel as a base from which to explore Kenya’s expansive seas for big game fishing.
